Welcome to Sister Health Empowerment (SHE), where we explore the many intersections of health and disease with race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status and how they impact Black women's health.

When I received an unexpected diagnosis common to many Black women, my degrees in biology and public health helped me understand my options; but, they did not make me immune to what I was up against -- a health disparity.

After countless days of scouring the internet, consulting family and friends, and finding healthcare providers who acknowledged and listened to my health goals, my health outcome was a positive one. But unfortunately, all Black women cannot say the same.

So, I decided to do something about that. Assuming the role of a health advocate and coach, I now promote health literacy to Black women through three tenets: education, encouragement, and empowerment.

Health disparities among Black women will not change overnight. Nevertheless, breaking the silence and building awareness are powerful tools for improving patient outcomes.
